Banjo-ukes also called banjo-leles and even occasionally uku-jos, first made their apearance around 1916. At that time ukuleles were very popular and there was a demand for a similar instrument that had more volume but was still easy to play. By the 1920's banjo-ukes were being produced in the thousands by a number of companies.

Vaudeville provided the perfect venue for these fun little instruments. Alot of vaudeville shows were in rowdy settings and these inovative instruments could cut thru the din of a noisy crowd. With the decline of vaudeville shows, the banjo-uke faded into history and are only now making a comeback.
